Here is a Chromecast tip that I came across today. You can play local video files with Chromecast. This feature is described in the following article:

Tip: You Can Play Local Video Files Through Chromecast ? Droid Life (click for full article)

    by Kellex - July 25. 2013

    From the article:

"Outside of owning a Chromecast device (which is sold out everywhere), all you have to do is install the Chromecast extension on your PC, then find the file path of a local video file that you'd like to play, paste that path into the address bar in a Chrome browser, and then press the Chromecast button to cast it on over. It really is that simple."

How can I open settings screen of chromecast to change output settings? By default it output 1080p 60 - but I need 720p 60 or 1080i.

    Thanks in advice!

I am having the same problem as above with the video but with a twist. My TV only supports 1080i (I think the 1080p is broken because the screen with flash about every 10 seconds). How do I switch the input res of the chromestick itself? It does not matter what my computer broadcasts because the my TV is always having 1080p input to it.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

The stick doesn't seem to have force video resolution setting, (it seems as) it auto sets to TV's native video.

I don't think this is a stick limitation but rather a TV issue. i.e., the TV native video resolution is 1080p, the stick feeds 1080p (plugged directly w/o cable or any devices in between)?

Fyi, the Chromecast stick supports CEC-HDMI & it also seem to pick the correct (EDID) TV's native video resolution (so fare). also, on a side note, other steaming devices may have force video resolution settings but they may not support CEC-HDMI and/or auto video settings and they require hdmi cable (that may alter the video bandwidth).

if you connect it directly to an AV receiver (w/ a video processor) you can force video settings @ the AVR to solve the TV issue, btw.

it sounds like you're not sure what video resolution the stick feed is? Or, why the screen flashes every 10 sec? Could you post the TV make/model and a screen shot of the "TV info" displaying resolution/rate while casting?

    Hi!

I have a similar question on Chromecast stick's output. Thank you for the info on the lack of force resolution setting ... does it mean that Chromestick can output only 1080P resolution? My TV is old, doesn't have HDMI, so the max input it can take is 1080i. TV can accept 480i/480p/1080i (Mitsubishi 55819 circa 2002). I am using a HDMI-to-component converter.

For example the chip inside the newest Roku3 can not do anything lower than 720P ... I'm wondering if it is the same scenario? Or is there possibly a 'hack' where you can foce the resolution output to 480P or 1080i (assuming the chip inside the stick is capable)? Although the TV is old it still works & the display PQ is great.

Luckily I have projector with HDMI for work purpsoes so I know the Chromecast stick is working but I would love to use it at home with my old TV.

The Chromecast stick seems to support 1080p & 720p native TVs. (via hdmi>hdmi)

I don't have access to 1080i TV (w/o 720p), so it's hard to tell how the stick 'd handle it.

Try & see what happens, connect the stick through (maybe a used) revue/ gtv-stb & set video output to 1080i. or, via an AV receiver w/ a video processor & set it to 1080i.
    * you'll still need an audio system w/ optical-in (as CC outputs A/V via hdmi).

Fyi, HDMI-to-component converters are problematic, especially w/ most new streamers.

Thank you. Unfortunately I don't have those boxes to try but your "fyi" strikes a cord as it jives with what I've been experiencing - even with ATV. The HDMI->Component converter is problematic :-(

$10 adapter turns Chromecast into cheap Sonos competitor - Liliputing (click for full article)

    by Brad Linder - Feb. 9, 2014

-- Here's how it works. The Chromecast is designed to plug into the HDMI port on a TV and let you stream internet media to a big screen while using your phone, tablet, or PC as a remote control.

But if you use an HDMI to VGA adapter that also has an audio output, you can plug the audio cable straight into the input on a speaker or home stereo system. This lets you stream audio to you high-quality speakers without turning on your TV.

All you need to do is fire up your Android or iOS phone or tablet or a PC with the Google Chrome browser and Chromecast plugin, choose a supported app such as Pandora, Rdio, or Songza, hit the Chromecast icon, and tap play.

The Chromecast will grab your audio straight from the internet and stream it to your speaker. You can pause the music or switch tracks or apps using your mobile device. But you can also turn it off and let the music keep playing. Not bad for $45.

Of course, you don't get some of the features that really make a Sonos (or Beep) cool, such as the ability to stream audio simultaneously to multiple speakers throughout your house, or pick up where you left off in a different room. And the audio quality might not be stellar. But it's yet another way to make use of Google's inexpensive media streamer. It's just too bad Google didn't include a separate audio output in the device itself.
